Blueberry Season (usually from mid-July to early September)
The Hugli family has been growing nutritious & delicious high bush blueberries for over 30 years. Please check our crop report for up-to-date conditions during the season. There are 17 acres of blueberries with 17 different varieties that ripen at various times. Children are always welcome to pick with an adult. To keep everyone safe, please review and follow our Covid-19 safety measures below that are in place. There are no pets or smoking permitted in the field. There is a designated smoking area. Fresh, picked blueberries are also available for sale in the Country Market. Sorry, no pets are allowed on the property. Smoking in the designated smoking area only (not in the fields, play area, store and outdoor seating area).
Pick-your-own $7.75/kg. Fresh picked – $7.75/qt, $13 1.5 litre, $21 3 litre
The rows closest to the ranch building are designated for those with physical disabilities. A wheelchair can easily fit between and under the bushes.
Unwashed blueberries will keep for up to a month in a dry, sealed container. Wash the blueberries when ready to serve. To freeze blueberries, wash your blueberries and drain well, then pack into containers leaving 1/2 inch space at the top or pack in plastic bags. The key is to drain well, and then you can easily scoop out the blueberries as needed.
Did you know that one-half cup of blueberries delivers as much antioxidant power as five servings of other fruits and vegetables? The high levels of anthocyanin in blueberries, a natural antioxidant, make blueberries powerful allies in the fight against ageing, heart disease and cancer. Anthocyanin is the same substance that gives the fruit its rich blue colouring. Blueberries also contain large amounts of chlorogenic acid, which is thought to be one of the “cancer fighters” found in fresh fruits and vegetables. Blueberries also have potent anti-inflammatories such as the arthritis-relieving pigment cyanidin.
After picking blueberries, we invite you to visit Hugli’s Family Fun Play Park (admission required).
During the fall, we add more seasonal activities such as the 6-acre corn maze, wagon rides to the pumpkin patch, pig races, pirate pumpkin cannon shows & more.
The Hugli’s have been growing pumpkins for over 11 years and offer a variety of sizes, shapes & colours, as well as a large assortment of gourds & squash. You will also see giant pumpkins growing in the field, weighing over 500 pounds.
Our pumpkin patch is open during our fall family fun season (Sept 14 – Oct 31). Admission to the Fall Family Fun activities includes access to the pumpkin patch to pick-your-own pumpkin (pumpkins sold separately). Wagon rides to the pumpkin patch, and the shows are available on the weekends. We have complimentary pull wagons that can be used to bring back your pumpkins from the pumpkin patch.
Next time you are carving a pumpkin, do not throw away the pulp or the seeds – instead, boil, bake or cook them in any form you like. Pumpkins’ bright orange colour is due to the high amount of carotenoids present in them. Carotenoids assist in staving off the free radicals in the body, and help in preventing premature ageing, cardiovascular diseases and other infections. It is also high in Lutein & Zeaxanthin, which protect the eyes against free radical damage and prevent the formation of cataracts and degeneration of the eye tissues. Pumpkin seeds are a rich source of essential fatty acids. Regular consumption of pumpkin (both seeds and flesh) can promote the health of your eyes and boost your immune system remarkably. The high Vitamin C content in pumpkins also offers protection against various forms of cancer.
On weekends, the Rockin Christmas wagon playing your favourite Christmas tunes will take your family out to the tree plantation. Instructions on cutting your tree and a saw will be provided. We have hundreds of trees to choose from. A tree host will help cut your tree (if needed) and load your tree on the wagon and into your vehicle. Twine to secure your tree is also provided.
Reservations are not required, $45/Tree + HST.
Covid Protocol: Face coverings are required in the store, on the wagons and when you cannot be 2 meters from others. Hand sanitizer stations are located at the entrance and exit of the store. Please use them. Stay safe and help keep everyone else safe.
Cut trees are also available for sale on the deck at the country gift store seven days/week until Christmas. $45 and up. Balsam and Fraser Fir.
We use a sustainable method to harvest the trees where a new tree will form from the remaining stump, so the tree is not killed in the harvest. The tree responds to this method of harvesting like it would be too heavy pruning. Hugli’s Blueberry Ranch was the first in Ontario to introduce sustainable Christmas tree harvesting. We now have trees that have produced 2 Christmas Trees, and the original tree is still alive.
In the 1950s and into the ’80s, the Hugli’s were in the Christmas tree business. On their tree plantation near Beachburg, thousands of trees were harvested and sold locally, in Ottawa and into the United States. With a passion for growing Christmas trees, Bill Hugli also became one of the founding members of the Ontario Chrismas Tree Growing Association. Today, the original Christmas tree farm is a model plantation of forestry stewardship. It is used by the County of Renfrew and Algonquin College as a demonstration plantation.
In the spring of 2005, over 2 acres of Christmas trees were planted at Hugli’s Blueberry Ranch in Pembroke. Over the years, more trees have been planted that include four different varieties. Each spring, the trees are carefully pruned. In December 2011, the trees were ready for harvest, and the Hugli’s invited the public to come and cut their own Christmas tree.
